In between ski trips I always find myself thinking back to my favourite moments on my last trips. It's these magic moments that not only keep me excited about my next ski trip, but remind me of those perfect moments in life where daily worries just drop away. Even with the longer warmer days more suited to a consideration of a surf in board shorts, I can't seem to shrug off daily daydreams of my favourite moments of the previous season.
Last year my favourite moment took place on a ski trip to the new powder mecca of Gulmarg in Northern India with our Mountain Guides and group of clients. It goes little something like this...
The snow was swirling around, whipping my face whilst the last few skiers in our group and mountain guides skied down off the ridge and out of sight. I knew the snow and wind would settle in a moment to reveal a long, undulating and glorious slope with well spaced pine trees that would guide me across the deep untracked powder terrain.
With a new storm system arriving yesterday, our blue bird days had given way to heavy snows, as 40cm of powder fell overnight, with an additional 30-50centimeters forecast over the next 24 hours.
Our perfect view across the Himalayas including the 9th highest peak of Nanga Parbat was not possible today as Gulmarg's top Gondola, the highest in the world reaching to 4,000 meters, was closed until the system passed.
With the lower Gondola operating until 2,500 meters, our group had set off and quietly climbed for 45 minutes in our ski touring gear to reach a ridge called Mary's Shoulder. With the group now waiting at 700 meters below the ridge, I knew that I was literally the highest skier on this mountain and almost certainly higher than any other skier in Asia for that matter.
It may not be Everest, but with the view ahead of perfect untouched Himalayan powder, I would not have traded places with anyone in the world. I then pushed off towards my first turn feeling the joy and anticipation as the adrenalin pumped through my body. Then next 700 meters of vertical would be pure powder bliss through well spaced tree glades and deep powder filled openings, but it's always the silence and excitement of pushing off that I think back to.
Ahhh... Pure bliss…. Now back to work (and planning my next ski trip as the Northern Hemisphere ski season is just around the corner. Yee haw!
