Swine flu slashes Mexico cruises
By: Katrina Archer and Bruce Piper, Cruise Weekly

Cruises to Mexican ports have been cancelled or re-routed, while fares plummet to lowest ever levels as the swine flu pandemic hits the seas.

An American woman who recently returned from a cruise to Mexico has contracted the virus, according to US health officials, raising concerns that other passengers may be infected.

It has not been revealed which ship the woman sailed on, but it is also possible she contracted the illness while in San Diego, where several cases have been reported, after returning from her cruise.

For the past week, cruise lines have cancelled port calls in Mexico as swine flu fears spread worldwide.

A spokesman for Princess Cruises told CW that itineraries involving Mexican ports had been "modified following the travel warning issued by the US Centre for Disease Control recommending against non-essential travel to Mexico".

Royal Caribbean has also suspended all calls in Mexico "for the immediate future". Instead of visiting Cozumel, its ships will will spend more time in other ports, call on alternative ports in the Caribbean, or spend additional days at sea.

The worst affected ship is Mariner of the Seas (pictured), which will visit San Francisco, Seattle and Victoria BC instead of three ports in Mexico, until 14 June.

Passengers booked on the revised sailings are eligible for compensation or rebooking.

Carnival Cruise Lines has also cancelled and replaced Mexican port calls for all cruises departing until 11 May.

Carnival passengers booked on the 16 affected ships have the option of a future cruise credit to use before the end of 2010.

Holland America has cancelled its Mexican ports for in-progress sailings, while NCL's Norwegian Pearl and Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Infinity have also changed routes on their repositioning cruises.

Cruises extend Mexico port ban

Carnival Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean Cruises have suspended calls at Mexican ports for at least another month.

Although previously advising the ban would apply until today, Carnival has now cancelled all visits to Mexico until 15 June due to the outbreak of the swine flu (influenza H1N1) virus.

Booked passengers who do not wish to sail on the modified itineraries must advise Carnival by today in order to receive a refund in the form of a future cruise credit.

Royal Caribbean Cruises, including Celebrity Cruises, has also announced its temporary suspension will be in effect "for the immediate future".

The extended period will allow additional time to better understand the full impact of the swine flu, the company said.

Meanwhile, Royal Caribbean has implemented an Influenza Prevention and Response Plan, developed in coordination with US health authorities.

The plan includes screening embarking guests and crew members regarding any flulike symptoms, recent trips to Mexico or contact with people with swine flu.

All onboard 'high-touch areas' will be santitised more often, with hand sanitisers provided throughout all ships.

Guests will also be provided with information about how to prevent the spread of flu, and if necessary, onboard medical staff have been instructed to isolate and treat people who display flu-like symptoms, using anti-viral medications kept onboard.

Behind the Scenes

Norwegian Cruise Line has introduced a new enhanced version of its 'Behind the Scenes' backstage tour onboard its ships, which is seven hours long!

The tour includes:

  • The laundry areas
  • The galley to see the chefs at work preparing meals
  • Backstage of the theatre, including the wardrobe room
  • The bridge for a meet and greet with the ship's captain

The new longer version adds things like a sushi-making demonstration and sake tasting, pre-dinner cocktails in one of the ship's lounges, plus dinner in speciality restaurant, Cagney's Steakhouse.

Titanic's 100th Anniversary

The 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic is being celebrated with a cruise, which recreates the sailing of the infamous ship in 1912.

Scheduled for April 2012, British company Miles Morgan Travel has chartered Fred Olsen's Balmoral for the trans-Atlantic voyage from Southampton to New York, following the Titanic's original route.

A memorial service will be held on 15 Apr in the exact location where the ship went down, and the food and entertainment match the original cruise.

Even spookier, the cruise is taking bookings for 1,309 passengers - the same number that sailed on the Titanic.
