With a location like this, it's no wonder it boasts a rich river trade history and that it is the ideal location to celebrate all things wooden boats at the towns bi-annual South Australian Wooden Boat and Music Festival.The festival began here back in 1980 and now attracts around 15,000 visitors and locals to the 3 day event, consistently drawing entrants, spectators and media from all Australian States and overseas. It is set on the 100 year old plus wharf at Goolwa and is claimed to be the only place, possibly in the world, where both steam powered boats and steam trains still operate side by side.The festival is a celebration of the significance of Goolwa and of the Nation's rich boating heritage. As the name suggests, only wooden boats are eligible to enter the competitions, and this provides the spectators with a touch of yesteryear. Paddle steamers, yachts, cruisers of many classes and even built on the spot' canoes or rafts compete - all made from wood.
