Big Boy's Toys, NEW SOUTH WALES
Airing Date: Jul 4th, 2005
extremedriving.net give you the opportunity to experience a little of what it takes to drive big plant machinery. The course begins with an instructional session on basic control of the machines - to move levers, pump pedals, lift buckets and move earth from one location to another. You will then have an opportunity to learn how to drive each machine.
You will start with the Excavator, a machine designed for moving earth from the front, and then from the back. You will learn to move earth from 360 degrees around and place it in a big truck and take it away. Then it is on to the Backhoe, followed by the Bobcat where you'll learn what makes these Bobcats lift their bucket, empty their bucket and slide sideways.
The Bobcat is probably one of the most commonly known pieces of earthmoving equipment and the most fun! This is initially a course designed for a bit of fun, although you can come along and do the accredited course later and become fully skilled. You can gain the work safety kit to drive these vehicles professionally.
Another vehicle extremedriving.net offer is the Armoured Personal Carrier - a massive green tank that can charge through forest and over streams. During its 48 year history, this ex-Australian army APC has seen service in Hong Kong and Singapore, and still drives superbly! It is an English machine weighing some 11.5 tonnes, and is powered by a huge straight-8 cylinder Rolls Royce engine.
The Big Boys Toy carries 10 people as well as the driver and instructor, so it is exceptional for a team day out!
For rally car driving there are two different cars, one a Subaru WRX and rear wheel drive Toyota Sprinter. Your time with extremedriving.net will be spent learning a few of the tricks of the trade.
You start with a 20 minute question and answer session, during which you can gain an understanding of some of the skills used everyday in rally driving. You will then head to the track, which features a wide-open, cleared, flattened area, devoid of all trees, where you can move the rear wheel drive and four wheel drive turbo cars sideways and lose and regain control of the cars under expert tuition from qualified instructors.
A great spot to go after your day of adventure is Harrigan's Irish Pub in Pokolbin. Not only can you get a cold beer and a good meal, you can also stay the night in comfort.
