Local tour operator Cool Safaris conduct full day 4WD adventures of the Newnes State Forest into the heart of the Lost City. It's an ideal way to explore the region.
The initial leg of the tour involves a 45 minute drive into the bush to the first pit stop. This is a fantastic look out point that shows visitors a whole new side of the Blue Mountains - the western edge, a view that most people never see. The Wolgan Valley is absolutely stunning and runs as far as the eye can see.
The 4WD adventure continues further into the bush to the May-inge-goo Murra Cave. There are about 50 hand stencils in the area, and while their exact age is unknown, the whole area has been dated back some 12,000 years. The local Wiradjurri, Gundungurra and Dhurak tribes used the cave as a spiritual teaching place.
Exploring the caves can work up quite an appetite. The package price includes a selection of food to keep visitors energised throughout the adventure.
After lunch the tour continues to the Lost City. The Lost City isnt really a lost city - it's actually sandstone that has been eroded down by the wind over millions and millions of years. However, if you use a bit of imagination it looks like the remains of a very ancient city. The area spans 40 hectares, or 25 football fields, so there's plenty to explore.
