Newcastle, NSW
Airing Date: Aug 11th, 2007
Two hours drive north of
Sydney is
Australia's sixth largest and second oldest city,
Newcastle. Once known as 'Steel City', it was originally the home to an abundant and thriving steel industry. Today
Newcastle Harbour remains a bustling port where old meets new and with the recent development of its stylish and cosmopolitan waterfront precinct it is fast becoming a major draw-card for locals and visitors alike.
Honeysuckle is the site of the former industrial wharves and is now an open plaza with restaurants and cafs overlooking the water. It is deemed by the local Novocastrians to be their equivalent to
Sydney's Darling Harbour precinct.
Harbour Square at
Honeysuckle boasts hip and happening eateries. This includes the contemporary and sophisticated 300-capacity Terminal One bar and restaurant where sumptuous seafood platters can be served indoors, or al fresco on relaxing Japanese-style beds.
Amongst the historical maritime buildings of the
Honeysuckle Precinct, the Crowne Plaza Newcastle hotel is situated directly on the Newcastle foreshore. It features 175 one-bedroom suites, with 58 rooms overlooking the city and 117 rooms providing a dazzling harbour outlook.
Around 20 minutes out of Newcastle's CBD is Warners Bay where visitors can taste the deliciously zany Dippin Dots ice-cream by scenic Lake Macquarie. Dippin' Dots are unique and flavoursome little "dots" of ice- cream, yoghurt, sherbet and flavoured ice.
At night, head back to
Newcastle's CBD to live it up and hang out at some of the pubs and clubs. The King Street Hotel is one of the most popular; Level One opens seven days a week, while Saturday and Sunday transforms Street Level into party mode where Dj's literally raise the roof. Level Two is an intimate world-class nightclub and has played host to many national and international Dj's and events. Located on Level Three, the Supperclub provides a very unique addition to the establishment. It is available for functions seven days a week and open to the public Saturday nights from 10pm.
And, of course, one of the best ways to maintain the stylishly sleek experience of travelling around Newcastle is to hire a stretch limousine.
