Unleash the 18th century sailor within...The Australian-built replica of Captain Cook's ship Endeavour well deserves its reputation as one of the world's most accurate maritime reproductions. When you step aboard the beautifully crafted ship you see what a sailor's life was really like on one of history's great maritime adventures.
Endeavour is two ships in one...a museum vessel complete with artefacts in port, and a working ship (with the artefacts stowed away) at sea.
Launched in Fremantle on 9 December 1993, the replica spent its first 12 years visiting Australian ports and voyaging around the world twice...calling at British and European ports as a museum ship and taking paying crew on ocean excursions.
When it returned from its second world voyage, in April 2005, ownership transferred to the Australian National Maritime Museum.
While Endeavour will spend a large part of its time on display, the museum maintains the ship in survey to ensure that it is ready for regular sea voyages around the Australian coast.
The Australian National Maritime Museum will be sailing Endeavour to ports around the Australian coast on a reasonably regular basis. Opportunities exist for anyone interested in 18th-century sailing to join the Endeavour as a paying crew member on future voyages. You can choose to be part of the voyage crew or a supernumerary.
