Andrew discovers the spectacular beaches of Port Stephens. Port Stephens is located on the east coast of New South Wales 200km north of Sydney.It has remained relatively unspoilt, avoiding the high-rise rush adopted by other areas along the NSW coast.
The real beauty of Port Stephens is that everything is so close by. You can walk from Shoal Bay to Nelson Bay, which is a hub of activity with restaurants or grab a bike and ride to some of the more secluded beaches like Wreck Beach on the surf side of Port Stephens.
Shoal Bay is a protected bay and with its pristine sandy beach, blue waters and resident dolphin population, is a very popular holiday destination. Along with the numerous water activities, boating, fishing spots there are also some amazing walks. The top of Tomaree Headlands offers a spectacular view of the coastline of Port Stephens.
Nelson Bay is the largest town in the Port Stephens area which services the smaller townships around the coast of Port Stephens. Fingal Bay is a short drive from Nelson Bay and Shoal Bay and is on the surf side of the peninsula.
This is a great family orientated beach with patrolled swimming areas and also a good spot for fishing. There is a cycle/walking track from Fingal Bay to Shoal Bay and on to Nelson Bay.
Fingal Bay is also surrounded by Tomaree National Park with its many scenic bush walks. The southern end of the harbour entrance is dominated by Tomaree National Park, over 2,000 hectares of coastal bushland, 20 kilometers of rocky coastline, beaches, volcanic hills, rocky bays, chasms, pillars and caves. The coastal section from Anna Bay to Morna Point is the best place to explore these features.
