Port Stephens Fishing, NEW SOUTH WALES
Airing Date: Apr 28th, 2007
Port Stephens is just a stone's throw from
Sydney and a popular family holiday spot boasting 25 beaches.
Located around 200 kilometres (a 2.5 hour drive) north of Sydney and 50 kilometres (45 minutes drive) north of
Newcastle, Port Stephens is not actually a town, but an area encompassing a number of towns including
Shoal Bay,
Anna Bay and
Salamander Bay.
Nelson Bay is the biggest, and some say the unofficial capital, of Port Stephens.
The harbour is two and a half times the size of
Sydney Harbour, and extends over 20 kilometres inland. The clear, unpolluted waters of the bay are fringed by white, sandy beaches and natural bushland.
A great way to explore the water is on a fishing charter.
Calypso Fishing Adventures have a 43ft boat offering charter tours for up to six people. Captain Tim Dean and his crew will take you out marlin fishing and you can expect the best with them as they regularly win game fishing competitions and know all the best spots. Port Stephens is actually home to the oldest game fishing club in Australia and its no wonder the game fishing lures people from far and wide to this stunning stretch of coastline.
Port Stephens isn't only great for fishing, but it's also the biggest producer of oysters in Australia.
Holberts Oyster Farm will show you behind the scenes of an oyster farm and is a great place to enjoy some of the local produce while taking in the scenery.
