Snowy Meltdown, NEW SOUTH WALES
Airing Date: Nov 20th, 2006
Thredbo turns 50 in January and so it's a good excuse to get down to the Snowy mountains. Don't ski? Don't worry!
Mountain bike trails are a great way to see the area. There are hundreds of kilometres of mountain bike trails around the Snowy's region with nice cruisey trails for the easy riders and gnarly terrain for the downhill dynamos.
For beginners the bike trial around Jindabyne Lake is great, then up a notch you can try the 30 min Thredbo Riverside trail. Buntys Trails at East Jindabyne is an 18 km network of trails with spectacular lake and mountain views from beginner to advanced.
For a quick track down some slopes there's the Thredbo bobsled. Engineered with 700m of luge style track, the bobsled twists and turns its way down the mountain whilst each rider has total control through an extremely efficient brake and can descend the track at whatever speed he or she feels comfortable with. And the best part is, it's got an automatic uphill tow!
Nordic Walking is one of the fastest growing recreational fitness sports in the world and it's coming to Thredbo this summer - a first for Australia!
Nordic Walking is designed to engage the upper body with the use of specifically designed walking poles. Compared to regular walking, Nordic Walking involves applying force to the poles with each stride - therefore Nordic Walkers use their entire body and get an excellent back, chest, arm, shoulder and abdominal workout.
