Sydney Artist's Enclave, NEW SOUTH WALES
Airing Date: Sep 4th, 2006
Famous Australian artist Ken Done, has always had a love affair with Sydney. He, like so many artists before him, Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton, Charles Conder, Brett Whitely, just to name a few, have been inspired by the natural beauty of inarguably one of the world's most spectacular harbours.
The Sydney Harbour Walking tracks' starting point is Taronga zoo at the Athol wharf. There is a shady bush track that leads around to the right and hugs the shores of little Sirius Cove.
It was along this shoreline, more than 100yrs ago, that some of Australia's renowned Heidelberg School artists, Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton, to name a few, set up an artist's camp.
It's now possible to walk from Taronga to Balmoral beach. This walk takes in some historic military sites, spectacular Sydney harbour views and a chance to drop in on a brand new artists' enclave at Lower Georges Heights.
Aussie legend artists, Conrad Martens (View Above Balmoral - 1874) and Julian Ashton (A Sydney wharf down at Clifton Gardens) also painted in this area.
Cobbittee Art school offers the opportunity for small groups (12-15) to explore an environment close to the city, yet taking the day student to the heart of Australian culture.
They aim to help visitors experience first hand this historic former Aboriginal and military site next to Australian bushland overlooking the Harbour and Watson's Bay.
