Tweed River, NEW SOUTH WALES
Airing Date: Jan 1st, 2002
This seafood heaven is just outside Tweed Heads, near the New South Wales-Queensland border.
The Tweed River is shadowed by the beautiful Mount Warning and winds through some 60 kilometres of mangroves and protected rainforest, making it a picturesque setting for fishing.
To experience all the action jump onboard a Catch-a-Crab cruiser. It's a one-way tour straight back to nature which runs four days a week.
The two-hour eco adventure is all about hand-feeding the local pelicans. Catch-a-Crab supplies all the feed, which is their natural diet of river mullet and pilchards. All you have to do is be patient and then feed them.
The feeding frenzy will build up your own appetite making the visit to The Terranora Lakes Oyster Farm timely.
The farm is 10 minutes up the river and is open six days a week all year round. It's a great place to pick up some of the local produce at a reasonable price.
After the tour it's time to find a place to sleep, so how about sticking to the water theme and renting a houseboat. Maps are supplied and there are marked buoys on the river to help you navigate.
The vessel sleeps up to eight people making it a great escape with a couple of mates. It comes complete with a lounge, bathroom facilities and you don't need a license to captain it.
The beauty of a floating holiday is when you get tired of the view simply up anchor and move on. And as a bonus with every houseboat you get a free dinghy, crab pots and a New South Wales fishing licence.
