Arnhem Land Safari, NORTHERN TERRITORY

Arnhem Land is one of Australia's last frontiers, and a spectacular scenic region. Apart from one town, Nhulunbuy, visitors need special permission from the Aboriginal owners to enter Arnhem Land.

The world's oldest evidence of the use of axes with ground-stone heads is found there, along with the earliest evidence of Aboriginal occupation of Northern Australia. Eastern Arnhem Land is one of the traditional centres of bark painting, while Western Arnhem Land, which Shelley visits, is the centre for rock art paintings.

Take a one hour flight on the 5 star Direct Air from Darwin to Mt. Borradaile in Arnhem Land. The remote and mysterious Arnhem Land is the ultimate destination in wilderness adventures. Some sites date back 60,000 years or longer, and can be seen only via organised safari tours.

Davidson's Arnhemland Safaris will show you a wildlife smorgasbord of birds, animals and reptiles. Wallabies, dingos, goannas, tree snakes, turtles and frill-necked lizards are just some of the wildlife that you may encounter as you are guided through your day's activities. At the end of the day, you can be assured of a comfortable night's sleep at Davidson's Arnhem Land Safari Camp. You'll be staying in double or twin share tents with beds that include 240 volt power outlets, and external lighting. As well as the tents spaced in a wide semi circle around the communal complex, the camp includes a briefing room, library, kitchen, dining areas and amenities. You will also enjoy 5 star gourmet dinners featuring bush tucker like crocodile and buffalo, to name a few.

To relax and unwind, take a swim in the crystal clear waterhole - crocodile-free of course! Or cruise the waterways filled with colourful and flowering lily pads on the Billabong cruise at sunset with wine and cheese. Very civilised!
