Barra Nationals - Northern Territory
Airing Date: Jul 14th, 2007
The
Daly River might be described as a Territory outpost but it is THE place to go to catch that elusive king of fishes - the Barramundi! The Barra Nationals are held annually on the
Daly River, 224km south of
Darwin.
Since its inception in 1996, the Barra Nationals has developed into one of the premier fishing tournaments on the Australian calendar. This "catch and release" event is hosted by the Palmerston Game Fishing Club. Even though the event has grown in popularity, it has not lost sight of its origins or the reasons it began and that is to provide a world class fishing tournament for the average fishing fraternity.
It costs $4,200 per team to enter the competition (a team = 3 people) and this covers entry fee, accommodation and all meals. Drinks are extra! 2007 is the first year that there is a permanent restaurant on site. Every other year a restaurant was trucked in for the event. There is a pub brought in for the event, called the
Darly Dungeon. Many backpackers work at the pub during the Barra Nationals.
At the end of every day, an award is given for the champion angler. Points are allocated according to the length of the fish caught. The person with the most points at the end of each day gets a prize.
At the end of the comp, there is a prize given for the champion team and the champion angler. There are runners up prizes for the best Local Team, best Mixed team (people from NT and interstate), and the best Interstate team.
