The Savannah Way, Part 4, NORTHERN TERRITORY
Airing Date: Oct 23rd, 2006
The Savannah Way is one of Australia's ultimate adventure drives, linking Cairns in Tropical North Queensland with the historic pearling town of Broome in Western Australia, via the natural wonders of Katherine in the Northern Territory.
Gregory National Park - NTGregory National Park covers an area of around 13,000 square km and it's the Territory's second largest National Park.
The park features spectacular range, gorge and Karst formations, as well as significant traces of Aboriginal culture, European exploration and pastoral history.
It's inhabited by rare species of wildlife, significant traces of Aboriginal occupation and the scenic limestone gorges..
Daly Waters - NTDaly Waters played an integral role in the London to Sydney air race of 1926. In a past life it was also a World War II air force base and a refuelling stop for Qantas.
In the 1930's the town was the north's most significant aviation centre situated at the junction of major air routes. The oldest hangar in the Territory, transported there in 1930, remains at the aerodrome and is managed by the National Trust.
Daly Waters these days is primarily known for its pub - which is one of the oldest licensed establishments in Australia (it is actually THE oldest licensed pub in the NT).
Even people who have never been to the Northern Territory know of the legendary Daly Waters Hotel.
Today, with a population of about 23, the town of Daly Waters has little to commend it apart from this historical institution which is full of very colourful characters.
Daly Waters lies 212 metres above sea level and is located 620 km south of Darwin on the Stuart Highway. Now little more than a stopover for people travelling along the Stuart Highway the tiny settlement was named by John McDouall Stuart during his epic attempt to cross Australia from south to north in 1861-2.
