Feathers Sanctuary is centrally located in Darwin Australia and is only a ten minute drive from Darwin CBD.
Feathers Sanctuary is a unique concept of combining first class bed and breakfast accommodation with the beauty of native wildlife. The purpose of keeping birds at Feathers Sanctuary is to breed some of the rarer species held in the collection.
Feathers Sanctuary Bed and Breakfast provides a tranquil environment, with the huts located within the expansive garden settings enabling you to enjoy a quiet drink while relaxing on the patio and taking in the views of the surrounding native flora and fauna. Your hosts are more than happy for you to accompany them on the daily rounds of feeding the many bird varieties. While taking a leisurely stroll around the sanctuary, take the opportunity to learn about the native birds that are attracted to the area. You are able to feed the barramundi in the courtyard and feed the birds in the walk in aviary!
For a look at the natural environment further a field join a Mangrove and Mudcrab tour. Run by David Boustead, the tours are available daily and cater to one booking only per day.
The tour starts by looking at black and white clown fish that David breeds. Black and White Clown Fish are found only in the Darwin area. Fish require specially cultivated planktonic food for the first month of their life and they produce their own plankton on the farm. The demand for these fish have increased since the 'Finding Nemo' movie!
You will then head out on the mangroves. The tour departure and return times vary daily due to tidal restrictions. It is beneficial to get on the water early, as many bird and fish species are actively feeding on the first run of the tide. It is also the best time to see crocodiles as many of the bars and banks are still exposed. Guests who see the bay at low tide also get to see the vast difference between the low and high tide watermarks.
