Lords Kakadu Safari, NORTHERN TERRITORY
Airing Date: Jun 16th, 2003
The tour is operated by Sab Lord, who was born and bred in Kakadu. He knows all about the region and takes tourists on an unforgettable three day journey deep into the heart of Kakadu National Park - the second largest national park in the world.
The tour kicks off with a visit to one of the oldest art galleries in the world. It's not the typical art gallery - the artwork is actually on rocks, and was created over 10 000 years ago by the area's original inhabitants, the Aboriginal people.
Two local Aboriginals talk about the meanings of these fascinating X-ray paintings. If you're impressed by what you see, you can buy indigenous art and craft at Injalak Arts and Craft Centre at Oenpelli. Handmade traditional didgeridoos start from $120 and dilly bags from around $45.
Next stop is a further three hours into Kakadu National Park - Gunlom Falls. The group stops here for lunch before continuing to Gagudju Holiday Inn at Jabiru for the night. The inn offers 110 rooms, a restaurant, bar and an outdoor pool located in the centre courtyard. Visitors can enjoy some downtime here before the early start next morning.
The morning's activities start at the crack of dawn with a two hour cruise down the stunning Yellow Waters Billabong.
Considered Kakadu's most famous wetland area, Yellow Waters is teeming with saltwater crocodiles and an abundance of birdlife. As the boat cruises down the still water, you can watch the native wildlife awakening with the morning sun.
Even more exciting is the Jumping Crocs Cruise on the Adelaide River. You can watch these crocodiles lunge up beside the boat, crunch their sharp teeth into their feed and retreat victoriously into the murky waters.
