Litchfield National Park, NORTHERN TERRITORY
Airing Date: Apr 26th, 2004
The best way to see Litchfield National Park, about two hours' drive from Darwin, is to explore it yourself in a 4WD. Whether you decide to visit during the wet or dry season, there is plenty to see and each experience offers something unique.
The wet season starts around October and ends in May. If you decide to visit at the beginning of the dry season, the landscape will be still be lush and green with overflowing waterfalls.
The Wangi Falls is a must-see stop at Litchfield Park, but as inviting as the water may seem, a swim is not recommended as a lot of saltwater crocs like to hang out there. If you need a break from all the driving, stop at the secluded Monsoon Caf, which recently opened last year. The caf is owned by a German couple who have both worked in the tourism industry for many years, and can offer useful advice for your trip.
Leaving Wangi Falls, head down to the Reynolds River and take the Wangi Wildlife Cruise. This is a great place to check out all the unique wildlife, and the later you travel in the dry season, the more animals and birds you're likely to see. The lack of water elsewhere means that they all have to feed at the river.
As Litchfield is relatively unknown, you can enjoy your exploration of the area without bumping into many other tourists. There is also the advantage of the park being smaller than places like Kakadu, which means there's less distance to walk from the car park to the attraction.
Park rangers on site will answer any of your questions, and also provide 'walks and talks' for anyone interested in learning more about the fauna and environment.
It may be useful to check whether any roads are closed due to heavy rainfall in the wet season. A 4WD is not necessary, but it will make your drive more fun.
