Tropical Challenge, QUEENSLAND
Airing Date: Aug 22nd, 2005
If lazing on a beach is too tame, plenty of adventure awaits in tropical North Queensland.
Jennifer Hawkins took a tropical challenge, checking out the adrenaline-pumping action in the air, on land and on the water.
Quad Biking
Located 30km from the centre of Cairns and 9km from Kuranda, Mild to Wild Adventures offers quad-biking experiences. Various styles of tracks across different types of terrain are available. The motorcycle tracks are carefully laid out to be challenging, but tracks are available for beginners and advanced riders.
One exciting way to experience the scenery of the Kuranda Range and rainforest is to ride a four-wheel motorcycle or All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) through the bushland and mountain trails. Wildlife may be seen, as three dams on the property provide water for kangaroos, wallabies, lizards and birds.
The tour includes pick-up and return to Cairns accommodation, a guided ATV tour with training, helmet, and safety equipment, tea, coffee & snacks. The tour is usually about half a day and you must be aged over 14 to ride a quad bike.
Minjin Jungle Swing
The Minjin Jungle swing is located 15km north of the city in the foothills of Saddle Mountain. It allows swingers to fly 40m above the rainforest canopy at speeds of up to 100km/h.
The swing is operated by AJ Hackett, the company famous for being the first major adventure operators of the bungee jump. Equipment similar to a hang-gliding harness is worn and the swing operator hooks you to a rack (alone or with one or two friends).
You are then winched to 40m above the rainforest canopy. The swing operator will signal when to pull the release cable. Then gravity takes over and the fun begins.
Tully River rafting
On a five-hour Tully River full day trip, rafters can tackle up to 45 extraordinary rapids. The magnificent waterfalls that cascade down the gorge walls, through World Heritage rainforest, provide an unforgettable backdrop.
