Wilderness Challenge, QUEENSLAND
Airing Date: Mar 1st, 2004
The Wilderness Challenge has every need catered for. This exclusive safari can design a trip to suit anyone's camping needs. Whether you like fishing, bird watching or exploring stunning landscapes for photography, what you want to do is up to you. Best of all, you have professional guides and their 4WDs to take you to even the most remote places around Cairns.
Wilderness Challenge will take you inland to Karma Waters Station via Port Douglas and Mount Carbine. Karma Waters Station is a working cattle property of about 450 square kilometres, so there's plenty of room to camp. The camp site is located on the beautiful Mitchell River, a great spot for a swim. You won't be swimming alone though - the river is home to prawns, fish and freshwater crocodiles. But there's no need to worry - the freshwater crocs aren't the ones that attack you.
In fact, the Wilderness Challenge doesn't seem like much of a challenge at all. The organisers provide everything, from food to equipment - including a kitchen sink! Dinner is a far cry from the usual snags and damper - there's a menu for starters, and the gourmet food is washed down with a glass of fine Australian wine. The accommodation resembles a marquee more than a tent. You'll actually sleep in a bed, and there are even quilts supplied instead of sleeping bags.
The Wilderness Challenge also stops at Mount Carbine pub, where you'll be sure to run into a few local characters.
