Bass to Barra Fishing Trail , QUEENSLAND

The Bass to Barra trail was launched in April 2005 and has been so popular that a Bass to Barra Trail Guide has been released. This trail is Australia's only closed freshwater sports fishing trail. The guides are available at Tourism Centres in the various regions that the trail passes through namely The Gladstone Region, Bundaberg, Fraser Coast and South Burnett (South East Qld) Country. There are nine lakes on the trail map and they are: Bjelke-Peterson Dam, Lake Boondooma, Lake Waruma, Lake Cania, Lake Callide, Lake Awoonga, Lake Monduran, Lake Lenthall and Fairburn Dam.
In 2007 Lake Paradise will be added to make 10 lakes in all. Lake Cania is noted for Saratoga fishing.. A fishing permit is required year round to fish here and costs $7 for a week or $35 for a year. People can pick it up from Cania Gorge Caravan and Tourist Park. Lake Cania has Bass but no barramundi. Other fish available include Spangled Perch, Saratoga, Golden Perch (Yellowbelly) and silver perch.
The seasons for Barramundi fishing are:
- Closed from the 1st of Nov to the 1st of Feb
- Open from the 1st of Feb to the 1st of November.
- The seasons for Bass fishing are:
- Closed from the 1st of June to the 31st of August.
- Lake Cania and Lake Monduran are exempt from the close season.
- Opened the rest of the year.
