Glassford Creek Farm Stay, QUEENSLAND
Airing Date: Aug 7th, 2006
Glassford Creek Farmstay is situated on "Boxvale", a working cattle farm in Central Queensland.
"Boxvale" was purchased by the Oram Family in 2003 and runs about 400 beef breeding cattle and around 25 horses on over 4000 acres of rugged bush land. This family-owned and run farmstay is the place where everyday people can get a taste for what it's like to live on a farm and take part on daily farm activities. Horse Riding is a major feature of staying at Glassford Creek and they offer horses to cater for any level of experience.
Incorporating actual farm work into the horse rides including mustering the cattle on horseback is an essential part of the farmstay. Of the 25 horses on the property, around 15 to 16 are available for use by guests. Normally horses are matched with a person and if guests strike up a bond, the same horse will be with you for the duration of the stay. There is also the opportunity to enjoy early evening twilight on a sunset horse ride or even better to take a ride into the hills and have an overnight stay in a swag with the stars as your ceiling!
If however horse riding isn't your thing there's still heaps to do on the farm. As with the horse riding most of the activities are related to the everyday working of the farm. Farm tours in the 4 wheel drive are conducted regularly. On the farm tours, general duties such as checking cattle, watering and fencing are also completed. There are also heaps of animals on the property all needing to be fed or handled. Milking the cows, feeding horses or orphan calves, educating young cattle and feeding bulls all need to be done on a daily basis and guests are encouraged to join in and experience the lifestyle.
The original manager's residence has been renovated and developed into a guest house. Rooms are double or twin share with shared bathrooms, one between two bedrooms. Families are welcomed and there are also disabled facilities in place. It's definitely a small friendly place only accepting 8 guests at a time. Home cooked meals are served in an outdoor dining facility so it's also a good place to socialise or simply sit around the camp fire and talk into the night!
