Hot and Cold on the Gold Coast, QUEENSLAND
Airing Date: May 26th, 2007
Circle on CavillCircle on Cavill is an exciting new leisure and shopping hub of the
Gold Coast. Positioned in central
Surfers Paradise, the city block is accessed via
Surfers Boulevard, Cavill and Ferny Avenues. Circle on Cavill features an mix of national and niche retailers, a fresh food precinct, and an open people's piazza with super-sized video screen entertainment.
Circle on Cavill was developed by Sunland Group, same people behind the Palazzo Versace and Q1. The entire Circle on Cavill precinct is 14,541 square metres (equivalent to 2.5 football fields).
The design was motivated by the need to provide a 'heart' to Surfers Paradise by locating a large circular piazza to be the centre of Surfers Paradise. The idea initially came from Hollywood and the movie
The Wedding Planner, where the locals would meet weekly to watch vintage movies in
Central Park.
Like the movie, Circle on Cavill features a giant super-screen in the circular piazza area which will broadcast daily morning & evening news programs, music video clips & fashion, lifestyle shows, movies and events.
Minus 5Visitors are treated to a very cool experience, literally, at Minus 5. First, guests are taken to a 'warming room' and provided with parkas, woolly boots and double gloves (the inner gloves are sterilised) to wear over normal clothing. Then, people are given a 20-minute timer to wear around their necks before entering the freezing environment for the Minus 5 experience.
First created in
New Zealand, Minus 5 is a bar chiselled entirely from ice. It is kept at -5oC and patrons can stay for just 30 minutes to avoid frostbite or hypothermia. Staff work on 2 hr rotations inside the ice lounge, wearing special Northface clothing.
Drinks are pre-paid for at reception, as bulky gloves make it impossible to handle money, and cash registers and credit card machines malfunction in the low temperature.
Everything is made from ice and it took five builders, five days to create the cool environment. Walls, stools, tables, sofas, glasses, the bar and elaborate sculptures are made entirely of ice. Every piece of ice in the bar, apart from the ice glasses which are from New Zealand, is imported from Canada.
Bartenders are trained to show the art of drinking vodka and have an almost unlimited array of cocktails on offer. Minus 5 serves only vodka-absolut because of its taste and relationship to the ice hotels in Sweden. Uneaten 'glasses' are simply smashed and thrown away.
There are 4 minus5 ice lounges, two in NZ and now two in Australia.
