Sailtrek Learn to Sail, QUEENSLAND
Airing Date: Sep 19th, 2005
If boom, jibe, leeward and tack all sound like a foreign language, then chances are you aren't a sailor. !But if you've always dreamed of being the next Sydney to Hobart winner, then its time to get into training.
Based on the Gold Coast, Sail Trek runs a variety of courses starting from the bare basics to being able to charter your own yacht. On the two day course you learn personal safety, rope-work, knot tying and pulling on the sheets as well as using a dinghy and outboard motor, steering and sail handling, sailing terms, weather, anchoring and basic navigation.
You're out on the water for two days mastering the art of skippering a vessel. As you would expect it is a very hands-on experience, where you will be hoisting the mainsail, taking charge of the tiller, lowering the anchor, as well as watching for wind changes and tying the sheets.
After a hard mornings sailing you can head into the Couran Cove Island Resort on South Stradbroke Island for a bite to eat. The resort has four different restaurants with varying styles of meals, from light lunch to seafood platters. The island has an 84 berth marina where you can moor your yacht while you're on terra firma getting a seafood platter for lunch!
If you've done a good job you'll get presented with a certificate which will become your boat licence - the Competent Crew certificate issued by Yachting Australia. This qualification means you can charter a yacht anywhere on the globe or work as a yacht crew anywhere in the world.
