Little Morgue Winery, Budrim, QUEENSLAND
Airing Date: Jun 27th, 2005
The Little Morgue Winery in Nambour, Queensland is one of the most unusual cellar doors in Australia.
Originally built as a textile factory the building was then converted to a morgue, and now it's a winery and cellar door.
The interior design aims to bring the new and old aspects of the building together.
The cellar door is based on the building's upper level which was originally the chapel.
With high vaulted ceilings it offers a viewing platform to the winery operations below.
The platform is where the coffins used to be hoisted during services. In the cellar guests can taste a wide variety of wines with quirky names including Dead Dry, Slightly Chilled and Rest in Peace.
The lower level is dug-out making it the perfect environment for a cellar with a constant temperature of 18 degrees.
During the morgue period the cellar was storage space for the dead prior to the funeral services.
True to its history as a morgue, the Little Morgue Winery invites all souls to a night of fun and unusual happenings to celebrate Black Friday with Black Friday dinners twice a year.
Guest dress in appropriately ghoulish outfits and there's a prize for the best costume. Lively music makes it difficult to keep your feet still and a four -course dinner featuring bits and bones, creepy crawlies, spicy flesh, something fishy and yes, the usual sudden death by chocolate.
