Waikerie Camel Safari, SA
Airing Date: Nov 8th, 2004
There are many ways to experience the Australian landscape - a 4WD through dirt terrain, a train ride across flat plains - but if you're after a completely different experience, join a two day camel safari starting in the semi-desert countryside of South Australia's Waikerie.
The trip starts at Rex Ellis's Camel Farm where you'll be introduced to your camel. The oldest domesticated animal in the world, camels offer a unique way of exploring the landscape around Waikerie. After learning how to mount a camel, the group heads into the outback.
It's well known that camels can go for some days without drinking water, but it's not actually water they store in their humps; it's fat! Unlike the camel, humans need to eat regularly, so lunchtime provides a much needed fuel stop and a chance to stretch the legs.
At the end of the day the group heads to the Murray River to set up camp. The camels are unloaded and fed and allowed to roll in the sand to relax. Rex begins cooking while guests can fish or swim before dinner is served.
After an outback feed, Rex and his pet dog Stubby provide a few bush stories before it's time to tuck into the swag and enjoy the nightly star show.
You'll wake up the next morning to a full breakfast and a boat trip on the Murray. The river cruise heads towards a koala colony, and you just might spot a few of these famous Australians in their natural habitat.
