Portee Station, SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Airing Date: Jan 1st, 2002
Portee Station is about a two hour drive from Adelaide and is the perfect destination for those holiday-makers who have dreamt of travelling to the outback but aren't too keen on roughing it.
The property consists of a restored 1870s country homestead with eight luxury bedrooms, long verandahs to laze on and a huge backyard to explore.
Portee Station takes up about 20,000 hectares, which are packed full of lush lagoons, wetlands and arid outback flats. The property also includes the mighty Murray River.
Since it is still a working station, the best way to experience Portee Station is to get down and dirty. Sheep management here pretty much goes on all year round and each day you will get to experience at least two hours of farm life.
With so much ground to cover it is recommended that you try the Rocket Launcher - an old World War II converted missile 4WD truck. It's a great way to experience the beautiful landscape. These half-day guided tours are available on request and are included with the price of the farm stay.
A stay in the outback isn't complete without enjoying a true blue bush barbie and snags, lamb chops and rissoles can all be cooked up on an open BBQ - with a billy tea to boot.
Portee Station is also a top place to see some of Australia's best native birds.
