Prairie Hotel, SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Airing Date: Nov 29th, 2004
The Prairie Hotel is a classic outback adventure with a slice of city luxury. Located near the magnificent Flinders Ranges and the vast red desert plains that sweep towards Lake Torrens, the hotel offers great character and charm, and since its renovations, plenty of creature comforts too - not something you'd expect in the outback!
When beer o'clock rolls round, the whole town of Parachilna heads to the Prairie Hotel. With a population of somewhere between three and seven, that isn't a lot of people, but add a few passing travellers, beer on tap and good yarns and you've got yourself an outback party.
If you fancy a bite to eat, head on over to the hotel's restaurant, renowned for their delicious and innovative menu featuring Australian produce. Sample a Feral Mixed Grill (or FMG) of emu, kangaroo and goat combined with native herbs and locally sourced fruits and vegetables. The menu also features more traditional dishes for the less daring.
The area around the Flinders Ranges is massive, and the best way to see it all is on a scenic flight. A 60 minute scenic flight costs only $160, and it's worth every cent. From 2000 metres or so above the air you'll see the magnificent Wilpena Pound, a strange rock basin and Lake Torrens, a dry salt lake that's only had water in it once since European settlement.
If you're not into flying, try a 4WD trip. Run by Hardy and Margie Caldwell, Hardy's Out 'n' Back tours offer just that - half and full day tours exploring the vast landscape.
After seeing Lake Torrens salt lake you'll travel onto the property known as Nilpena. Built in the 1860s, this colourful station is a collection of old stone buildings that included a shearer's quarters and woolshed.
The 4WD then heads back to Prairie, passing dramatic red sand dunes and the rugged Death Valley on the way to Mount Mickey.
