The 50,000 ha Coorong National Park was declared in 1966 to conserve the distinctive landscape, coastal dune system, lagoons, wetlands and coastal vegetation and the great variety of birds, animals and fish that live in or visit the area.
The Coorong National Park is about two hours drive from Adelaide and extends 130 km south east from the mouth of the Murray River.
Camel Tours & Treks SA provides camel rides on the Fleurieu Peninsula and four day treks on the Limestone coast within the Coorong National Park. They offer the choice of short rides at Encounter Bay, Victor Harbor and a two 2 hour nature based camel riding tours in the bush or beach.
They can accommodate couples or groups on their friendly & well trained camels providing a safe, enjoyable experience for all age groups. There is no minimum or maximum riding age, as the saddles allow babes to be held in the same rear saddle seat as their guardian.
Gemini Downs Coorong Holiday Centre was built by Wayne with his wife Kathleen and Berkley with his wife Nancy. They decided to build the holiday centre around 1974-1975 when stock prices were so low that they were only getting 20 cents per sheep and $5 per cow. They decided to keep the area as natural bush setting. They started with a bunkhouse which was originally used as shearers quarters.
A Kitchen/Dining was built adjacent to the bunkhouse. They then, over the years, extended the holiday centre to include cabins, units, powered/un-powered camp sites, ablution block, laundry, tennis court, indoor swimming pool, recreation room and a six hole golf course.
