Port Lincoln, SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Airing Date: Oct 27th, 2003
The town is located at the southern end of the Eyre Peninsula, around 660kms from Adelaide. It was named after Matthew Flinders' home county of Lincolnshire, and is considered South Australia's finest and busiest harbour. Fishing is a huge business in the area, with many fishermen making their fortunes out of the tuna industry.
But you wouldn't know that Port Lincoln is home to so many millionaires by the look of its main street. There are no fancy boutique shops or designer stores - no Prada, no Yves St Laurent and no Gucci. To find where all the money's hidden, you have to venture out to the hills or the harbour, to see million dollar mansions and million dollar boats.
The town is home to Australia's largest commercial fishing fleet, worth $40 million to $50 million annually, so it's no wonder that the seafood tastes great here.
You can taste some of the mouth-watering seafood during a walking tour of Lincoln Cove Marina. The Fishing and Aquaculture Tour gives a good insight into the multi-million dollar Port Lincoln fishing industry, including a look at a working prawn trawler, a walk around Lincoln Cove Marina and a prawn taste test. Tours are available Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 10.30am and cost $8 for adults.
While you get a seafood sampler on the tour, Sails Restaurant on the Marina is for serious food lovers. A massive seafood platter here will feed two people. Otherwise, pretend you're a millionaire yourself and jump aboard the luxurious Watermark catamaran for a half day or full day sail on the open sea where the air is fresh and salty.
The facts:
Half day sailing on the Watermark costs $70 per person. The full day costs $150 per person.
