Cradle Mountain Lodge, TASMANIA

Nestled on the edge of Cradle Mountain in Lake St Clair National Park, Cradle Mountain Lodge has always been a fantastic summer wilderness retreat with five star views and service. About two hours drive from Launceston, the lodge is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, mirrored lakes and dense Tassie wilderness.

Now, with its refurbishment, the lodge is destined to become an all-seasons escape.

You can pack your bikini for a holiday to the world heritage listed national park all year round. The brand new Waldheim Alpine Spa is the first Alpine Spa in Tasmania and reflects the natural purity and pristine beauty of the Tasmanian wilderness. The spa complex features local stone, slate, recycled timber and huge glass windows with dramatic views of the Pencil Pine River and Cradle Mountain Valley.

You can relax in the outdoor Jacuzzi or try one of the lodge's tantalising treatments, like the 90 minute Alpine Awakening. This involves a body polish, clay body mask, foil wrap and head massage, followed by a shower that will leave every part of your body completely rejuvenated. Also new are the top-of-the-range King Billy Suites. These two new suites are the ultimate in luxury. They feature recycled local timbers, hand-made furniture and a double-sided fireplace - perfect for that romantic winter escape. There's also a king-sized bed, an oversized bathroom and best of all, a large outdoor deck with private hot-tub overlooking the forest.

But as tempting as it is to stay indoors, this is one of Australia's most cherished wilderness areas, with more than 20 walks available, from a 20 minute stroll around the lodge to a three hour hike around Dove Lake.

For the more adventurous, there's always the full day hike to the top of Cradle Mountain itself. Fly fishing, mountain biking and horse riding is also available. Or you can check out the historic Waldheim Hut, where you'll learn all about the park's history.

Whatever you do decide, there's always a warm meal to look forward to at the Lodge's Highlands Restaurant, and an extensive cellar of local Tassie wines to enjoy.
