Cradle Mountain , Part 2, TASMANIA

Cradle Mountain Huts' six day, five night treks are a great way to see some of Tasmanias best landscape. The tours take groups of no more than 10 people, and each night is spent at a different hut along the track.

After several days of trekking pristine country, day five of the tour takes the group to Lake St Clair. A popular stop off point along the way is a hut that was built in 1908. Formerly home to Paddy Hartnett and his wife, it now stands as an emergency shelter. Fortunately for trekkers huts, like these are scattered throughout the park.

The walking days get shorter and easier towards the end of the week, which means there is more time left to explore. The further south the group travels, the better the scenery gets, incorporating sights like the beautiful Hartnett Falls.

The valleys include some of the most stunning stretches of rainforest on the Overland. Near the end of the track the land slopes down hill and the track gives way to gum trees, rivers and river mud. Lake St Clair marks the end of the Overland Track. The traditional end to the six day journey is a swim, or if its cold, a ferry ride across the lake for a perfect end to a challenging week.
