Airing Date: Mar 6th, 2006
The Central Highlands is Tasmania's premier trout fishing destination and caters for all types of trout angling.
By far the most famous area within this region is Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, an area of mountains, alpine moor lands, lakes, tarns and a wide variety of fauna and flora. Some of the popular fishing spots include Arthurs and Great Lake, Little Pine Lagoon and the Bronte system.
Formed more than 10,000 years ago by glaciers, Lake St Clair is Australia's deepest lake at 200 metres. The lake is approximately 13 km long, about 2 km wide and lies at the southern end of Tasmania's world heritage listed Cradle Mountain- Lake St Clair National Park.
Lake St Clair is trout haven. Brown trout dominate but rainbow trout are also present. A typical fish in the lake weighs 0.4-0.7 kg, however the odd 2 kg is sometimes taken.
The water in Lake St Clair is clear and the best areas to visit are the beaches at Cynthia Bay, Narcissus and Frankland Beaches. The best area to fly fish is the nearby St. Clair Lagoon.
