Woodbridge on the Derwent, TASMANIA
Airing Date: Mar 27th, 2006
Located 37 km north of Hobart and 30 m above sea level, New Norfolk is one of the largest centres in Tasmania.
The townsite was first explored by Europeans in 1793 when Lieutenant John Hayes sailed up the Derwent River and, when the river became too shallow, proceeded to row to a point just upstream from the present site of New Norfolk. You'll find 'Woodbridge on the Derwent' on the banks of the Derwent River in New Norfolk, one of Tasmania's most historic towns.
Woodbridge was built by convicts in 1825, and over the years has served as an academy for young gentlemen and a stately home to a member of parliament. For the past one hundred years, the property passed from owner to owner and over time, this Grand old mansion become seriously neglected, until it was recently restored by Perth couple Laurelle and John Grimley.
There are 9 suites available to guests. Each suite is unique and has been give a name that reflects the history of the building. And each suite contains something from the original home.
