The Heli-jet & Heli-wine day tour is run by Rotorlift Helicopters. It includes a 20 minute scenic flight from their base at Hobart Airport, an adventurous ride on the Huon jetboat and a drop-off at Home Hill Winery.
The scenic flight takes off as the helicopter flies over the Hobart Harbour, taking in views of Mount Wellington and the apple orchards of the south. The helicopter lands right next to the Huon Boathouse where the jetboats run from. The Huon River Jet Boats run two twelve-seater and five-seater jetboats for those looking for some splashes and thrills on the Huon River.
The Huon River is about 140km long and has many small creeks that drain the southern slopes of Mt Wedge, Mt Anne and the Arthur Ranges from the Huon Plain. From the pontoon, the jet boat heads up river for about 12km, passing by old jetties, farming land and a natural vegetation belt that includes small Huon pines.
The Huon pines name comes from the stands of pines that occurred along the Huon River. The river itself was named after Captain Huon Kermandec, commander of the French ship, L'Esperance. The Huon pine grows in the western and southern rainforests regions of Tasmania, largely confined to the riverine habitats.
Today, the felling of Huon pine is now restricted and they are protected within reserves with the majority being within World Heritage Areas.
On your arrival at The Home Hill Winery you will be greeted with sparkling wine. The Bennett family own the 4 acre property which captures views of Mount Wellington and Sleeping Beauty. You can buy the award winning wines from the cellar such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sylvaner, Sparkling Cuvee and a Late Harvest Sticky wine.
