Southwest National Park, TASMANIA
Airing Date: Jan 31st, 2005
There are few places left in the world that are as isolated and untouched as Tasmania's South West wilderness, the state's largest national park.
Over 600,000 hectares of wild, inspiring countryside, pristine forests and uninhabited islands are incorporated in the park. Without a doubt, this enchanting region epitomises the grandeur and spirit of wilderness in its truest form.
Run by Par Avion, A Day in the Wilderness tour starts with a dramatic flight into the heart of the park, passing over landmark areas like Federation Peak and the Western Arthur Range. After touching down at Melaleuca Airport, the rest of the day is spent exploring this World Heritage-listed gem.
A boat takes you along Bathurst Harbour, a peaceful body of water that's actually bigger than Sydney Harbour. Up ahead are the uninhabited Celery Top Islands, and in the distance are mountain ranges bathed in light fog and shimmering sunlight. The water sparkles with reflections of trees and the skies above. This truly is one of the last remaining virgin forests in the world.
After mooring the boat at one of the Celery Top Islands, you can enjoy a cuppa on the beach before taking a walk into the heart of the forest to view the fascinating Celery Top pines and horizontal shrubs.
The boat then cruises over to Clayton's Cove, a further 10 minutes away. After docking at the old jetty, you'll be shown the old Government House, which lies in the heart of the rainforest.
This heritage house is used by fishermen and hikers who need somewhere to stay the night. This furnished house is considered quite a blessing, especially for those caught in heavy storms.
But this is not the only historic house you'll find. A local legend called Deny King built his home and raised a family here. They enjoyed the isolation of the area and eventually established a tin mine and an airstrip, which is now Melaleuca Airport, and the only air access into the park.
You'll learn fascinating things about the park's history, explore beautiful areas and dine on a gourmet lunch under a rainforest canopy. And if you think this magical day can't get any better, wait until you check out the 360 degree views from Clayton's Lookout.
