Blooming Tasmania, Hobart, TASMANIA

Tasmania has a large number of open gardens spread throughout the state. Many of these gardens are of major historical significance and they prove what an ideal gardening climate Tasmania is.

Blooming Tasmania is a publication for those with an interest in natural or cultivated gardens. It lists organised tours, events and gardens of note within the state of Tasmania. It is produced by Tourism Tasmania and Tasmania's South Regional Tourism Association.

The guide lists a calendar of events and activities, regularly open gardens, 'Group Only Visits' gardens, specialist growers and nurseries, guided garden walks and tours and B&Bs in garden and bush retreats.

The 14-hectare Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens were established in 1818. It is the only botanic garden in Tasmania and the second oldest botanic garden in Australia. The Gardens are an important Aboriginal and European cultural heritage site. The most popular and spectacular areas of the gardens include: The sub-Antarctic house, the herbaceous border and convict wall and the Japanese garden Located in countryside reminiscent of the English Lake District, is The Scented Rose, a display garden of David Austin's English Roses. Set in three acres, the garden includes one of the finest borders of David Austin roses to be seen in Australia, and extensive topiary hedges classified by the National Trust. Situated on a low knoll jutting into the wide expanses of the Huon River, there are glorious water views to the Hartz Mountains World Heritage Area, and fine vistas to the north and south.

Inverawe Native Gardens, just 15 minutes south of Hobart, is a nine and a half hectare Australian Native Garden, located north of Margate on the Channel Highway. Inverawe is a four year old garden which includes a large landscaped garden, open forest and lightly timbered parklands. Inverawe is designed to be at peace with the environment and to do all the things a good garden should - inspire, relax, stimulate, recreate and above all, delight and intrigue.
