Hobart Dessert Trail, TASMANIA
Airing Date: Apr 9th, 2002
For a fun tour grab a classic VW Beetle and get stuck into some of the city's sweetest delights.
First stop is the Salamanca Markets. Held every Saturday, it's famous for its historic Georgian warehouses, dating back to the 1830s.
Many of these warehouses have been converted into galleries, theatres, cafes, craft shops and restaurants. From chocolate covered strawberries to homemade fudge, this is the place for a sweet snack for only a few dollars.
A 15-minute drive from the markets is the Hobart Cadbury Factory. Free samples of Roses chocolates and the famous glass-and-a half of milk chocolate blocks can be nibbled as you go on a guided tour of this famous chocolate-making factory, established at Claremont since 1921. The tour ends at the factory shop, where the whole range of Cadbury products can be purchased at discounted prices.
For something a bit more upmarket celebrate the very proper tradition of High Tea at the Hotel Grand Chancellor. High Tea is held Wednesday to Sunday and for $15 you can fill up on a scrumptious array of cakes and pastries.
Sticky Fingers Caf on Hobart's waterfront is a Tasmanian institution. Made from local produce their ice creams and gelatos are low in fat but high on flavour.
