Tassie Road Trip, TASMANIA
Airing Date: Mar 12th, 2002
CLICK HERE to go on Ernie's Virtual Road Trip of Tasmania.
The first part of his journey begins in the capital, Hobart, and finishes in the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park - about a three-and-a-half hour drive away.
Due to its size Tasmania is the perfect place for a motor home holiday.
It's uncrowded, unspoilt and there are many historic little towns to check out along the way, the first of which is Hamilton.
Here Ernie discovers the Hamilton Inn, where they have spring water in their own backyard, which they bottle and sell to the rest of the world.
Next stop is the Lake St Clair Wilderness Park.
Lake St Clair is the deepest natural glacial lake in the southern hemisphere, and Australia's deepest natural freshwater lake.
It stretches over 17km into Tasmania's World Heritage area and is a great place for fly fishing, walking, boating and swimming.
A further 45-minutes down the highway is the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park.
It's a place to park the campervan for the night and is free if you pick up a permit.
The Franklin River is one of the great rivers of Australia, and the only major wild river system in Tasmania not to be dammed.
It flows for 120km from the Cheyne Range to the Gordon River, from an altitude of 1400m down to almost sea level.
