Tasmanias a state full of amazing outdoor pursuits. Fly fishing is one of the most popular, primarily because of the states policy about the sport. The successful hatching and release of brown trout into the waterways has resulted in Tasmania now having one of the purest strains of Wild Browns in the world. Almost every permanent stream and river in Tasmania and most lakes now hold brown trout, with a growing number holding rainbow trout as well.
Roger Butler runs Red Tag Trout Tours from Tooms Lake in Tasmania. His tour package includes a scenic flight from Hobart over spectacular countryside to the lake, all fishing gear, clothing and accommodation at a historic cottage. Roger has 35 years trout fishing experience and is keen to show fisherman some of his favourite fly fishing spots. One of them is along the Macquarie River, located by the historic property of Somercotes.
Dating back to 1823, Somercotes now belongs to the National Trust because of its historic and cultural significance. Somercote's history is intertwined with Tasmanian colonial history and today guests can experience the past by staying in one of the beautifully restored cottages set amidst English- style gardens.
The best time to go fly fishing in Tasmania is then between August and April, which is brown trout season. The warmer months are best for fishing because the fish feed off the water's surfaced.
