King Island, TAS

Airing Date: Sep 22nd, 2007

If there's one thing most people know about King Island, it's the exceptional fresh food produced in the area. From beef to seafood and the finest dairy products, few people leave the island without at least sampling some of its divine King Island Cheeses, and the Dairy is the place to go for those mouth watering treats. While worth a visit is King Island Bakehouse for one of their popular Crayfish Pies, there's more to King Island than just these gourmet delights.

There's also Kelp.

The Island itself is 64km long and 27km wide. The main township of Currie is home to the main harbour of the island, most of the island's facilities, and is close to the airport.

Lying in the path of the Roaring Forties, and encircled by long, empty beaches, the 1700 or so King Islanders have a special relationship with the sea. They've even managed to make a multi-million dollar industry drying and milling 'Bull kelp' for export and creating a few innovative new uses for the plant too.
