Wilderness Escape Cruises, TASMANIA

This is Tasmania....home of the Tassie devil, fondly known as the Apple Isle and renowned for its scenic beauty. Now this beauty can be viewed from the comfort of a luxury cruise through the wilds of Tasmania. A cruise that even the Prince and Princess of Denmark (Frederick and Mary) have enjoyed on their time off.

The Tasmanian Wilderness escape cruise is run by World Heritage Cruises, one of Tasmania's leading wildlife cruise operators, who've been running trips on Macquarie Harbour and the Gordon River since 1896. The luxury cruiser the 'Discovery' is the latest addition to company; one which aims to provide passengers with a unique overnight wilderness experience - with first class facilities and cuisine.

The Discovery is a 33 metre, custom designed, low-wash & environmentally sound, luxurious catamaran (it's actually called a small ship) that sleeps 24 passengers and six crew. There are 12 comfortable rooms - 8 with queen size beds and 4 twin cabins. All cabins have individual climate control, ensuites and huge windows which extend along the length of the cabin for sweeping views of the wilderness in complete privacy and comfort. The cabins are fully serviced and all basic toiletries are complimentary.

The restaurant, bar, lounge and fore-deck library are located on the second deck which is fitted with floor to ceiling 'glass walls' - again providing an unobstructed view of the wild. Discovery also carries kayaks enabling passengers to glide underneath the towering banks of the Gordon river, explore the narrow winding creeks of Birch's inlet and go ashore in search of the endangered Orange Bellied Parrot or the historic ruins of Pillinger and Sarah's island. A unique platform lowers kayakers gently into the water and retrieves them in perfect safety and comfort. In fact, you don't even have to get your feet wet and in Tasmania, that's probably not a bad thing! Included on this cruise are all meals, luxury standard twin or queen cabin accommodation, guided shore excursions, water activities and onboard entertainment. You will need to purchase drinks from the bar. They offer a buffet style breakfast, but lunch and dinner is table service.

Highlights of this 2 night cruise include a cruise across Macquarie Harbour and up the Gordon River, with dinner and an overnight stop at Heritage landing. En-route you can see the unique Huon Pine tree that takes hundreds of years to mature and is only found in Tasmania - it can be seen along the river banks and at Heritage landing (some of these trees are 2000 years old). After travelling through pristine wilderness in luxury, Discovery winds its way back to Strahan offering an experience you'll never forget.
