Wheel House Apartments, Strahan, TASMANIA

Strahan on Tasmania's West Coast is a gorgeous town situated by the magnificent Macquarie Harbour. The harbour is the second largest in Australia after Sydney, so it's the ideal place for accommodation with a nautical theme.

The Wheel House Apartments were constructed by the owners Richard and Andrea Dyson over the past three years, and have been in operation since mid December 2002.

The apartments' cliff top position provides sensational views over the water. The idea was to create the sense of standing on the bridge of a huge ship, as though the apartments hovered high above the harbour itself.

Designed to give the sense of being inside the wheelhouse of a ship, the downstairs features a huge three-panelled glass wall that slopes outwards and upwards. The floor-to-ceiling windows overlook fishing trawlers, yachts, dinghies and the Gordon River Ferries. The maritime theme is constant throughout the two apartments. The accommodation is well equipped with downstairs dining and lounge as well as a state of the art galley.

Upstairs, there's a huge attic bedroom with a porthole, and even the flooring has pitch caulking just like the deck of a boat! To relax and unwind, there's a hot spa in the starboard cabin, or you can just sit out on the balcony and enjoy the sunset.
