Wynyard Tulips, TASMANIA
Airing Date: Sep 1st, 2006
Each year in early October, Wynyard in northern Tasmania is host to the Bloomin' Tulips Festival. In 1991, the Wynyard Tourism and Promotion Association ran the first tulip festival offering a weekend of entertainment, stalls and attractions to promote the area and attract visitors to the town.
Wynyard soon got branded as the 'Tulip Town' and today the entrances to the town are marked with large yellow tulip shaped welcoming signs!
Table Cape, Australia's biggest tulip farm, is an extinct volcanic vent which dominates the coastline close to the town with over 4 million tulips grown each year and 60 different species.
The tulip farm is only open for three weeks during Spring from late September to mid October. Visitors can wander through the tulip fields and choose their favourite to purchase and have them delivered for an extra charge.
During the Tulip festival a shuttle bus runs between the town centre and the Tulip Farm. Each year there is a variety of activities, exhibitions and entertainment for all ages to enjoy.
There's the Wynyard Tulip Toss as well as mini jeep rides, street parades, kite flying, car boot sales, art workshops, fireworks, yacht races, sculpture walks, floral displays and of course the huge floral display at Table Cape Tulip Farm!
For a bird's eye view of the floral spectacle and the dramatic coastal landscape, Sea Air choppers will take you on a 10 minute joy flight of the colourful region!
