Backpacking Baby Boomers, Apollo Bay, VICTORIA

Airing Date: Oct 2nd, 2006

Wouldn't it be nice to have a little experience behind you, a bit of wisdom, a bit of world savvy when you travel? Well, Australians over 55 have got all that along with the money and time to travel.

But not all 'senior' travellers are part of the grey nomad brigade that head off in their caravans to follow the sun. Some prefer to go hiking in Canada, cycling around Europe, or teach English in Thailand.

Travelling by yourself can be both exciting and daunting, but if you do your research, it can be the best adventure of a lifetime, and here are some tips to get you going:

    * Join the YHA! Even though it stands for 'youth' hostel there is no age limit.

    * Check with your home state seniors allowances - most states offer free travel vouchers (e.g. in Victoria travelling free in Melbourne metro on Sundays )

    * Stay in dorms - great for networking, and the younger people look after you!

    * Don't book ahead- be flexible as you can get some great last minute bargains

    * If you are traveling solo, check out the deals that don't have a single

    supplement.

    * Check if a return ticket is cheaper than two singles.

    * Check if daily, weekly or monthly tickets are cheaper.

    * When staying in hostels or backpackers, swap addresses with fellow travelers. You never know when you may be in their country and need information or even a bed.

    * Ask for seniors discounts. Some hostels will give you a free night's board for a couple of hours work.

    * Check out Elders Hostels in Canada and USA on the internet.

    * Email is free at some airports and libraries.

    * Buy a city map and walk to see the sights. That way, you get a better feel of the city and its people.

One of Australia's newest and best additions to the YHA / IH stable is Eco Beach. The $3 million, architect designed hostel features solar power, spacious lounges and outdoor balconies. It also has a rooftop deck offering spectacular views across the bay and coast.

The hostel is centrally located and guests can walk to the beach, golf course or through the township itself, or for the really ambitious, hire one of the hostel bikes and cycle along a scenic stretch of the Great Ocean Road.
