Areas such as Blairgowrie, Sorrento and Portsea, on the outer reaches of Port Philip Bays' arms, are the playgrounds of Melbourne's rich and beautiful, and they've been chosen with good reason.
Their front beaches face the placid waters of the bay and their back beaches catch the ocean rollers from the Bass Strait. The sand is clean and the water is crystal; it's the perfect place to launch a kayak and glide across the water! Bayplay is a registered PADI Dive Resort specialising in all levels of Scuba Dive Instruction plus guided snorkel or dive tours to the sea dragons. Bayplay also offer Sea Kayaking Tours of the Port Phillip Bay Coastline. All tours have a marine educational component, offering visitors an understanding of the environment they are visiting and how to preserve it. Instructors/guides Gary and Nathan both have over 110,000 dives to their names and are highly experienced divers. You're in good hands! They also have extensive knowledge of the marine life in Port Phillip Bay.
Kayaking has to be one of the most tranquil forms of water transport and when dolphins start popping their heads out barely 50 yards from your kayak it's really worth the sore arms!!! There is no doubling back on yourself, or going against the current either, as the trip is all one direction, starting from the pier in Portsea or Sorrento. The floating tour begins with a paddle up to the old Quarantine Station at Point Nepean. From there you turn around and hug the coast all the way back to Blairgowrie, sometimes coming across seals.
The trip is around 10kms and lasts as long as it takes the group to paddle that far (normally around 4.5 hours) with a break for a latte or fish and chips on the beach in Sorrento. Depending on wind direction, some tours start at Blairgowrie and finish at Portsea. Bayplay also offer adventure tours such as Sailing, Dolphin Swims, Horse Riding and Surfing via an in house local booking service.
