Stepping into Castlemaine's historic Theatre Royal for a screening of current and classic flicks is a unique experience, essential for all film lovers. And the best part? After the movie ends - you don't have to go home.
Back in 1854 the theatre was little more than a canvas tent with wooden poles and a dirt floor where miners turned up for live entertainment. The original Theatre Royal building was built in 1855. The current facade dates from the 1930s.
The theatre has now been in continuous use since 1857 which makes it the oldest continually operating theatre on the Australian mainland and one of Victoria's oldest theatres.
Backstage at Theatre Royal has been beautifully decorated to evoke the golden age of cinema, and also provides a wonderful insight into the history of the Theatre Royal with many old photos of the Theatre adorning the walls. When you stay here, you get to see the theatre's movies for free.
Private screenings and late shows in the theatre can also be arranged, or, if you prefer, settle back in your room and choose a DVD from their library of classic films.
