Great Ocean Walk, VICTORIA
Airing Date: Dec 4th, 2006
Visitors to Victoria's Great Ocean Road can now experience the area in a new way - and not just because the 12 Apostles recently became the 8 Apostles.
The Great Ocean Walk officially opened on Boxing Day 2005 and stretches 91km from Apollo Bay to Glenample and goes through some previously inaccessible and spectacular areas along Victoria's south-west coast.
The Great Ocean Road clings to Victoria's magnificent south-west coast, following the coastline for 300 km from Torquay to Warrnambool.
Commenced in 1919 and completed in 1932, the road was dedicated to the memory of all those who fought in the First World War and was actually built by returned servicemen using only picks and shovels.
The Twelve Apostles (now 8) are located along the spectacular Great Ocean Road. They were originally named the 'Sow and Piglets'. Located near Loch Ard Gorge, the Sow was Muttonbird Island, with the piglets being the smaller surrounding rocks.
A new local operator, Bothfeet, offers luxury guided and fully catered walks with accommodation at the Cape Otway Centre for Conservation.
Bothfeet is the brainchild of Dana and Gavin Ronan. Local to Victoria and with a history in the tourism industry, the couple are keen walkers themselves and saw an opportunity to introduce guided and accommodated walks to some of the Victoria's most popular natural attractions.
