Flemington is the best-known racecourse in Australia and home to Australia's most famous race, The Melbourne Cup. It is the oldest continuing metropolitan racecourse, with races held there every year since 1840. It was originally called the Melbourne Racecourse in its first twenty years, but became widely known as Flemington after the 1860s. Many of Australia's most famous trainers have maintained stables at or near the course. Today over 900 horses are trained within the vicinity.
Flemington Racecourse Tours take you behind the scenes for a sneak peek of what happens on race day. You'll also learn some stories about some of racings greatest icons, notably Phar Lap. On this guided tour you will visit the stalls area where the horses are fed and groomed. You may be surprised to learn that they even train the horses to urinate at the sound of a whistle so that they are ready to race.
The tour also visits the mounting yards. The only way to gain access to the mounting yards is if you are an official, trainer, owner or are part of a racecourse tour.
In 1977, at a cost of $8.5 million, the Victorian Racing Club constructed its largest grandstand to date. Located opposite the winning post, it is for many racegoers the best place to watch the races. The stand is open to the public and has all facilities including bookmakers, tote and bars. It is also home to the race callers' boxes and one of the more exclusive restaurants The Terrace, Skyline & Panorama where you can eat in style while watching the races.
