Melbourne prides itself on being the home of Australian Comedy. Not only is it home to a number of regular comedy venues and nightspots, where stand-up comics stand or fall, it is also the home of Australia's largest annual cultural event and one of the three largest comedy festivals in the world, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

This year you are sure to see the best of the best in town during the festival, between the 4th and 29th April 2007. Various venues around town, such as The Melbourne Town Hall and Athenaeum, will feature scores of overseas guest artists and local artists ready to leave audience in fits of laughter.

One man who is a regular at the festival and perhaps one of the most important and significant talents to have emerged from the Australian Comedy scene in the last ten years, is Australian favourite Dave Hughes, or "Hughesy" as he is affectionately known.

Hughesy is a St Kilda Local who cut his teeth at landmark entertainment venue, the 'Espy'. Today, The Esplanade Hotel continues to play host to a range of live music and comedy, whilst St Kilda continues to draw in the crowds with it's beachside location, trendy shops, patisseries, cafes and restaurants. It was at the Melbourne Comedy Festival in 1999 that, due to his rising popularity, Hughesy was forced to move from a tiny upstairs city bar into a 300-seat room at the Melbourne Town Hall,. Nearby the town hall are two of the cities best live comedy venues, The Comedy Club and the Comics Lounge, both offering visitors the chance to see some of the best live comedy available regularly in Australia.

Melbourne has no shortage of live entertainment and comedy venues and there's no better time to visit for a laugh than during the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
